The Mont Blanc Marathon is a sporting event comprising eight running competitions (trail, mountain and vertical kilometre) around Chamonix in the Mont Blanc massif. Each year it welcomes more than 10,500 runners and 30,000 accompanying persons from more than 80 different countries. The main event is a marathon distance race called the 42 km of Mont Blanc. A 90 km ultra-trail, the 23 km Mont-Blanc, the 10 km Mont-Blanc, the Duo Étoilé, the Young Race Marathon, the Mini Cross and the vertical kilometre are also on the programme. Some events are part of the Golden Trail World Series and attract many international athletes.
In 1979, the Mont Blanc Cross was created by the Chamonix Sports Club and had 292 participants2 . This event was part of the mountain running scene and was not yet referred to as a trail race at the time of its creation.
